How does geauxBIZ work?

geauxBIZ allows you to file your Louisiana business (i.e. corporation, LLC, partnership, etc.), register for a Louisiana tax account number, apply for a Louisiana unemployment insurance account number, and also file amendments, such as annual reports.
geauxBIZ for Louisiana Students simulates the steps for starting up a business in Louisiana, and requires students to follow the same steps to: • produce and print a real business license checklist based on the type of business the student wants to start up • reserve a fictitious name for the student’s new business, see simulated alerts for the Louisiana Secretary of State, and print a fictitious name reservation document • convert the student’s fictitious name reservation to a fictitious new business registration, see simulated alerts from the Louisiana Secretary of State, Louisiana Department of Revenue, and the Louisiana Workforce Commission, and print a fictitious new business registration document.

Why do I convert my name registration to a new business registration?

By reserving your business name first in geauxBIZ, you get up to 120 days to file a new business registration with a guarantee that you will be able to use the business name you want. This means that up to 120 days can pass between the time you complete step 2 and proceed with step 3 in geauxBIZ.
geauxBIZ for Louisiana Students simulates the same name reservation and conversion process, but it is designed for students to review and complete step 2 and step 3 in one session. After the student completes step 2, they can start step 3 by viewing the details of their completed name reservation and locating the Convert to New Business Registration link under Activities & Actions, the same place the link is found in geauxBIZ.

What is a registered agent and why do I need one?

A corporation's registered agent is the corporation's agent for service of process, notice, or demand required or permitted by law to be served on the corporation.
Each corporation must continuously maintain in the state a registered agent who may be either of the following:

An individual who resides in this state.
A domestic or foreign corporation or other eligible entity that continuously maintains an office in this state and, in the case of a foreign corporationor foreign eligible entity, is authorized to transact business in this state.
